Liam Smith signs with Matchroom Boxing

Liam Smith has split with long term promoter Frank Warren to sign with Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing. The shock split comes in the wake of Smith’s summer defeat to Jaime Munguia for the WBO 154lbs strap.

The split with Warren seems to be amicable, with both parties thanking the other and wishing each other well for the future. All the ‘Smith Brothers’, with the exception of Liam, have been under the Matchroom umbrella for a while now. With Callum Smith on the brink of a big fight at Anfield, Liam Smith may have wanted to have a chance of being on that card to make it a family affair. Often in boxing, a change is as good as a rest.

Former WBO Champion Smith will be looking to challenge for World honours again i’m sure and Matchroom will no doubt deliver for him. An all domestic 154 dust up with Kell Brook could also be on the cards at some point down the road. Especially considering that the Brook vs Khan showdown seems to be off the agenda again with Khan looking to announce a bout with pound 4 pound legend Terrance Crawford imminently.

What’s next for Liam Smith? I am sure we will find out soon.
